What is a Detox Diet?

Although detox is primarily thought of as a treatment for alcohol or drug dependence, the term is also used to refer to diets, herbs, and other methods of removing environmental and dietary toxins from the body for optimum health

What does a detox diet involve?

Advocates recommend many methods to help you detox. These range from the mild and pleasurable like saunas, massages and body brushing to the extreme and unpleasant such as colonic irrigation, bowel enemas and fasting. Herbal supplements like milk thistle, detox drinks and ‘liver’ tonics are often recommended. And making dietary changes, is of course, a bit part of most detox plans.

Detoxifying Your Body:

Generally most detox diets will contain the following foods:Organic food and drink (no pesticides or fungicides).Whole unprocessed foods (grains, nuts, seeds, etc).High mix of vegetables and fruit.2 liters of water per day.Certain herbs to aid the detoxifying process.

Is the Detox Diet healthy?

In fact, these symptoms are not likely to be due to elimination of toxins, which a healthy person can accomplish via the skin, lungs, liver, and kidney. These symptoms are likely to be caused by malnutrition. A three-day water fast followed by a 40-day diet primarily composed of fruit is simply not healthy. Even if you are able to meet your body’s calorie requirements, the absence of sufficient protein, essential fats, and minerals will cause your body to become less healthy, not more healthy, as you begin to break down muscle tissue. There are many other diets available that will deliver far healthier, more sustainable results than the detox diet.

The Detox Diet Plan:

After these three days - for one week put yourself on a monotrophic diet , i.e. eat only one type of fruit at each meal.For example: Breakfast could be melon only. Eat as much as you like and feel satisfied that you have had enough. All types of melons are good. Honeydew, Cantaloupe, Gala or Watermelon. Lunchtime: Eat only oranges and grapefruit or pineapples or plums whatever you fancy but don’t mix the fruits. Eat till hunger is satisfied.4 p.m. Have a large (12 oz.) glass of freshly pressed carrot juice.
Evening: Eat only apples, pears, grapes or bananas. Eat only one fruit at a time and eat till hunger is satisfied. During the week you can vary daily the fruits you want to eat on that particular day.
