Effective weight loss is closely related to metabolism. Unfortunately, many people simply don’t understand the concept of metabolism and metabolic change. But this is hardly their fault. There is so much information floating around out there, much of it over the ‘net or through a “friend of a friend who has a personal trainer”, that there’s bound to be some confusion and conflicting messages on how to loose weight. Furthermore, many people mistake their own weight gain and loss episodes as a matter of metabolic change. Sometimes this is true, and sometimes it isn’t.

There is no one way to accomplish this diet, as it can differ from person to person. The only foods that are truly forbidden are products containing white flour or sugar. You are allowed to eat some grain products, but must keep it to a minimum. The only fruits that might be allowed are bananas and watermelon. Beyond that, people are only allowed to eat a given amount of carbs each day. This amount depends upon the person, as some may only be allowed 20 grams a day, while others can eat 50 grams a day and still lose weight.

Our Stone Age ancestors certainly roughed themselves for food. They butchered the kill during the marathon hunt that lasted for days. They wandered for miles to gather wild fruits, grains and nuts. If they wanted to eat something sweet, beehive was smoked out of the bees to get the honey. This was done by climbing up a tree or chopping it down. Hard way to food!  Studies indicate that human beings come into the world with hundreds of genes and associated hormones that regulate the energy-balance equation. Calories consumed by us on one side and calories burned, through physical activity and calories needed to keep the body healthy on the other. Anything left over transforms into body fat.
One of the more recent and faddish approaches to weight loss are low carb diet. Low carb diets certainly make you lose weight, though there is no secretive explanation as to why this is. Aproximately 50-60% of the energy most of us consume typycally comes from carbohydrate, so cutting back on our carbs simply resuts in energy restriction.

There are many different versions of the low-carb diet, Protein Power, Neanderthin, The Carbohydrate Addict’s Lifestyle Plan, Life Without Bread, and others. All of them, however, have one thing in common — a very strict reduction in the consumption of carbohydrates. Most low-carb diets replace carbohydrates with fats and proteins. Although diets vary in their recommendations, as a general rule, a low-carb diet is synonymous with a high-fat and moderate protein diet.

The other thing about low carb diet is that they do tend to produce more rapid weight loss in the first few weeks or so, though this is largely due to fluid loss. Because carbohydrate stores in the body help maintain fluid levels, depleting it of carbohydrate will consequently results in dehydration. Studies have shown that after a couple of months or so, low carb diets do not produce and greater weight loss than do other diets of the same Caloric value.
