Health Benefits

Relief From Rheumatoid Arthritis

If you are concerned about rheumatoid arthritis, turnip greens are a good food to add to your shopping list. The beta-carotene in turnip greens is important because low levels of vitamin A, which can be formed in the body from beta-carotene, are associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Protective Actions Against Atherosclerosis

Turnip greens are loaded with antioxidant nutrients that protect against atherosclerosis. Vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene work in concert to help to quench free radical levels, thus minimizing platelet clumping and LDL (”bad” cholesterol) oxidation, two mechanisms central to the development of atherosclerosis.

Turnips are Tops For Health

Those with thyroid conditions should limit their intake of turnips since they contain substances called goitrogens, which can interfere with the functioning of the thyroid gland. For others, however, the turnip can be very healing.

The Tail Of The Swede And The Turnip

There is often confusion about the differences between the turnip and the Swede.  The Swede ‘Brassica napobrassiac ‘  is from Sweden (unsurprisingly) and was introduced to the UK as the Swedish turnip and the name later became shortened to Swede.

Buying And storing Tips

Since larger roots can have a more woody texture, look for small turnips. Smaller turnips also have a sweeter flavor. They should be smooth-skinned and without blemishes. Store them in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper, and use within a week or so.
