PABA is classified as a micronutrient and an antioxidant. The nutrient basically mops up free radicals otherwise known as “loose electrons” that cause cellular damage that is mentioned in the theories of aging. PABA helps the body form erythrocytes (red blood cells). Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body.

It is essential for the growth of micro-organisms. It prevents the bacteriostatic properties of the drug since it has similar chemical structure as that of sulphonamides. It forms a portion of folic acid. Its role in human nutrition is not definitely known. It is found effective in combination with Inositol and Pantothenic Acid (vitamin B-5) to check premature hair greying, and changing back to black colour of the hair.

PABA Benefits

PABA and Hair

PABA has been promoted for hair growth or to restore hair loss, or to restore hair color. There is not evidence at this time that a PABA supplement or a PABA hair product will restore hair loss or hair color, unless perhaps if someone has a severe deficiency of PABA, which would be quite rare.

PABA is also believed by some therapists to have a role in the relief of fatigue; perhaps through its role in the formation of the red blood cells which are vital for the transport of oxygen around the body, and to help alleviate depression.

PABA could reduce the onset of wrinkles as we age and smooth out the skin. The nutrient may restore the original hair color to some who have gone gray. It is possible that supplementation with PABA may actually correct a deficiency.

Another cosmetic benefit claimed for PABA is that it may restore the colour of grey hair.  Sadly, however, although general vitamin B-complex deficiencies have indeed been associated with premature greying, there appears to be little hard evidence that taking extra PABA may reverse this process.

PABA is used to improve the protein used in the body and to protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

The usual dose of PABA is between 30 to 100 mg. three times a day. In addition to PABA, the potassium salt of PABA called POTABA is available on prescription. POTABA is indicated for Peyronie’s Disease and scleroderma. The dose used for these disorders is 12 grams daily taken in four to six divided doses with meals. The dose for Peyronie’s disease and scleroderma is high and must only be used under medical supervision. Anyone taking more than 400 mg of PABA per day should consult a physician.
